6. Leslie J. McNair Memorial TheatreI couldn't find a "Leslie J. McNair Memorial Theatre" anywhere on the internet, but there's plenty written about McNair himself, hero of field artillery and the highest-ranking casualty of the war. The commander of the Army ground forces, McNair believed tanks were underused because military command couldn't see their full potential. He firmly believed tanks were more efficient than airpower to protect troops on the ground and in the air, but few listened to him. When he was killed in 1944 by American bombers trying to hit a target miles away, it seemed as if the Air Force was trying to make his point for him. Field artillery lost its biggest supporter in McNair. Without his dogged persistence in military command, several tank destroyer units were disbanded after the war. So here's our favorite field artillery man, Bill, who knew all about McNair and what he meant to FA guys everywhere. Bill looks so young--and we get a good look at his uniform, too. |
